Thomas Cutler was an architect, designer and author working in the late 19th and early 20th century. He wrote A Grammar of Japanese Ornament (published 1880).This wallpaper, with its pattern of sparrows in flight has clearly been influenced by Japanese design, in particular stencils and paper cuts.

The sparrows are close in spirit to japanese woodcuts. Cutler was an architect, who published a Grammar of Japanese Ornament in `880.
