Candlestick
1773-1774 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The eighteenth century approach to Gothic, exemplified by books like Batty Langley’s Gothic Architecture improved by rules and proportions (1747), was less than reverential. The stem of this candlestick resembles Langley’s Gothic columns, but the decoration on the base is neo-classical. The bases and stems for such candlesticks were often interchangeable.
