Stage costume for the Lilac Fairy designed by Mr Pearl for Fresh Dances for the Late Tchaikovsky by Matthew Hawkins, 1993. The production was staged at the Hackney Empire with a cast that included Matthew Hawkins, Rose English, Fenella Fielding and Diana Payne Meyers.
Fenella Fielding was a representation of the Lilac Fairy (originally a character from the ballet, The Sleeping Beauty for which Tchaikovsky composed the score in 1890) and her vast train became a part of the set. 'Kinky, lavish, perfectly imagined, each costume contained a proposition taken to its extreme', wrote Stuart Morgan in frieze magazine, 5 January 1994.
