Comfort and Privilege
While gentlemen were often restrained in their choice of daily footwear, in the privacy of the home they tended towards the exotic. Mule slippers in rich materials were worn by the wealthy 18th-century man at home and when receiving visitors. This tradition of luxury and comfort has continued into modern times. Today these indoor shoes are increasingly worn outdoors – suggesting a privileged informality.
