Mitsuhiro Matsuda graduated with a degree in fashion design from Tokyo's Bunka College of Fashion in 1961. After working for various companies he formed his own company, Nicole, Ltd. In Tokyo in 1971. He introduced a menswear line in 1974 and opened boutiques in New York and Hong Kong in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Matsuda's wardrobe offers a basic canon of separate elements. These components are never dull. Their versatility comes from simple silhouettes combined with unexpected fabrics and finishing details. This suit, with its roughly woven textiles, contrast stitching and unusual details such as the shirt's wooden buttons, illustrates Matsuda's delight in textural play.
