Vase

ca. 1912-26 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The copper body of the trumpet-shaped vase has an applied silver rim and base plate. The dull beige ground has been decorated with shaded white and green enamel orchids in silver yusen. Details of the leaves and flowers have been finished in gently raised moriage. An interesting aspect of this vase, which unfortunately cannot be seen in the photograph, is that the long leaf on the left continues up and under the silver rim and into the interior of the vase. A gold yusen enamel wasp with long rear legs hovers near the plant. Although the vase is unsigned, its shape, decoration, enamelling and colour palette are all indicative of Nagoya work, most likely that of the Ando Company.
