Vase

c.1912-26 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The copper body of the vase has an applied silver rim and silver base plate with the jungin mark. The superbly executed decoration is of bush-clover (Lespedza bicolour; Hagi in Japanese), chrysanthemum, gentian and other flowers in silver yusen on a blue enamel ground. The subtle shading of the flowers and foliage accentuates the vibrantly naturalistic composition, which spreads from the base to fill almost the whole of one side of the vase. The area below the rim has an abstract scrolling floral design in silver yusen enamels and the foot is decorated with delicate and finely worked abstract geometric motifs in silver yusen. The counter-enamel is of a matt brown colour, as is the inner base plate, which has the silver yusen mark of the Ando Company. The associated box carries the signature and seal of Ando Jubei as well as another seal indicating that the piece was made to imperial order.
