Vase

c.1912-26 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The copper body has what, unusually, appears to be an applied gold rim and gold base plate. The brown ground is decorated in silver yusen and moriage enamels with a single tree peony blossom with buds on a stem. The blossom and buds are depicted in shaded moriage white and pink enamels; the foliage and stem are executed in the same technique, with the leaves having a rich green shading. The counter-enamel and inner foot are a dull matt cream colour. The combination of relief decoration, subtly and expertly applied enamels together with careful use of space creates an elegant composition. The vase, which dates to the Taisho period (1912-1926), is unsigned but was recognised by the Ando Company as probably being one of their pieces (private communication from Mr Yoshida).
