The dark enamel ground on the hoop of this ring shows a tiny scene of a hunter and hounds chasing a stag in a forest. The figures are cut out from a thin sheet of gold and set on a translucent blue ground which suggests the sky.

Rings in the nineteenth century were worn by men and women, sometimes reflecting personal interests and sometimes merely decorative. This ring may have been worn by a keen hunter or chosen to refer to country life and pursuits.
