On a ridge on the right are a bull (wearing a makeshift wooden yoke to prevent it from damaging trees and property from butting), two cows and a drover near a farm building next to a hay barn with peaked roof (a kapberg, typical of North Holland). Spread across the foreground (from left to right) are a boy with a walking stick, a young man resting on a fallen tree trunk, a standing man in a brown coat pointing to the bull or the farm buildings, and a woman seated and reaching towards a child leaning against a tree stump. In the background on the left is a full hay wagon, and in the distance at centre are a few more figures on a riverbank and beyond is a view of a town with a large church (?Haarlem).
