Satiric Dancer

Photograph
1926 (Photographed), 1970s (Printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

By 1926 André Kertész had moved from his native Hungary to Paris. He took this photograph of the Hungarian cabaret dancer Magda Forstner in the studio of another Hungarian, the sculptor Istvan Beothy. The image conveys the good humoured friendship between Forstner and Kertész, and their enjoyment of the modern art scene. Forster’s rhythmical posture is carefully framed by the sofa, and her naughty pose mimics that of the sculpture.
