Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Rings of this type, with a wide flat bezel which follows the contours of the finger, and a thick shank with a diagonal pattern, are typical of Franconia in Germany where they were worn by the conservative rural population as part of their traditional costume in the nineteenth century. They always carry the image of a saint, or the Virgin Mary. The highly stylised image on this ring represents St. Michael fighting the devil, in the form of a dragon.
