Ring
1650-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This ring was described as seventeenth-century Russian when it was acquired by the Museum, with a group of other Russian jewellery, in 1866. The yellow, black and turquoise enamel, speckled with contrasting dots, and the green stone are consistent with a Russian origin, but it may not be as early as claimed. Old Russian styles enjoyed renewed popularity in the nineteenth century, with the revival of Russian nationalism, and much of the jewellery made then imitates earlier designs and uses traditional techniques, such as enamel and niello.
