Place of origin

This ring was described as nineteenth-century Tyrolese, worn by peasants in the Grödener and Eisack valleys, when it was acquired by the Museum in 1872. Garnets, or garnet-coloured pastes, were very common in traditional jewellery in the German-language Alpine region. This ring may have been a betrothal ring, as the colour red represented love.
