Beaton’s photographic contact sheets reveal how he directed the members of the royal family to pose, often only altering their positions by subtle degrees between one frame and the next in order to achieve the ideal composition. The contact sheets sometimes bear the photographer’s crop lines in blue ink, and markings such as stars or ticks to indicate his favourite shots.
