The date added to the image suggests it shows a scene from the 1943 production at the Liverpool Playhouse Theatre which was directed by Sir Michael Redgrave (1908-1985).

Physical description | Line drawn in pen and ink with watercolour wash on cream paper. A soft black watercolour wash has been used to fill in the background, with further details and highlights in black/grey watercolour used to depict on the figure in the foreground at the bottom left and to add a triangle of crimson in the top right corner. It shows a scene from a production of Blow Your Own Trumpet in 1943. Handwritten annotation has been used by the artist to label several of the figures. The sketch includes a series of male and female figures depicted against a backdrop of buildings. In the foreground a male figure (labelled Arnold Marle, Mael) is shown in profile, he is dressed in a shirt, tie, jacket and V-neck jumper. To his right, and in the centre, are a female and male figure, positioned on either side of what appears to be a sculpture or section of building. The woman is labelled, Marione Everall, Rosa and the man is labelled Andrea Malandrinos, Lorenzo Taruffi. |
