Object history
The donor's (Dennis Thorn) father John Harold Thorn was trained as a deep sea diver while serving in the Royal Navy from 1904 to 1919, and in the 1930s was employed by a group of marine insurers in the Red Sea area, based near Aden. In 1936 John Thorn sent home to his family a carved camphor chest which contained two Japanese cloisonne vases and this pattern book. The chest may have come from Hong Kong, where Mr Thorn's boat was sent for its annual overhaul. (See information on RF 2010/749).
