Drawing by Feliks Topolski of a scene from a production of Tamburlaine the Great, (Part I and II) with Albert Finney. The production was performed by the National Theatre Company at the Olivier Theatre, London in 1976. The production was directed by Peter Hall and Albert Finney played the title role, Tamburlaine, King of Persia. This was the inaugural National Theatre production in the Olivier Theatre and the play opened 4 October 1976 (rehearsals began 20 April 1976. but the opening of the production planned for July and August was postponed due to delays with completing the building).

Physical description | Roughly drawn landscape sketch on cream paper in felt pen, crayon and wash. It shows a scene from a production of Tamburlaine with Albert Finney. A series of line drawings of figures stand in profile, with a crowd or army to the left and three large figures to the centre and right. A grey wash has been used on the central figure to suggest a cloak, whilst the bold black felt pen lines used for the head and shoulders sketch of the figure in the bottom left hand corner indicates that he is wearing a plumed helmet and armour. |
