Object history | Note from the donor reads as follows: 'This wedding veil was hand embroidered by French nuns in a convent in Chandernagore, India, for the wedding of Eva Kelly to Robert George Browning on the 20th November 1928. Eva Kelly was born in Nainital in 1899 of Irish parents and Robert browning was born in Forest Gate, London, England in 1900. They had a lavish wedding in Kirkee, India, which most of the Regiment and their wives attended. The reception was held in the Ordnance Club, Kirkee. In 1930 they had a daughter Margaret, their only child. They remained in India until 1948 after India got her independence. Most of the men employed by the Ordnance were then disbanded with some coming back to England and others going to Australia., New Zealand, Kenya, etc. Robert, Eva and Margaret settled in Hornchurch, Essex. In September 1958 another bride wore this veil at her wedding: Una Nord who married Roy Jamieson in Hainault, Essex. In September 1959 the veil was finally worn by Margaret (Eva and Robert's daughter) when she married Peter Vosper in Hornchurch, Essex.' |
