The Coronation Day Sitting, Buckingham Palace
2 June 1953
For the Coronation sitting Beaton employed the help of his friend Patrick Matthews, the experienced managing director of Vogue Studios, who arranged a team of technicians and electricians. Even Beaton’s younger sister Baba was enlisted ‘to help arrange the trains’. These snapshots by Matthews show assistants John Drysdale and Ray Harwood amid studio lights and tripods, poised to adjust a lamp or reload a camera.
