Historical context
From a series of 15 drawings depicting occupations created in Trichinopoly, South India. As Indian artists became acquainted with European styles of painting and technique, painting in Trichinopoly became far more realistic and began to resemble paintings made for the British. Company paintings were created by artists employed by the British East India Company to illustrate the manners and customs of India.
