British: Artwork (Jane Foster and Patrick Gottelier), 1985

The component pieces of the intarsia knitted (stocking stitch) sweater and cardigan were over-printed with a dark blue linear design before being made up. The garments are edged with wide cable-stitch bands. The long, narrow skirt, which flares over the knee, teamed with loose fitting tops in pastel shades sums up the fashionable silhouette for summer 1985. The hat with wired rim was inspired by a Chinese folding hat.

Artwork frequently use a historical theme when planning a new collection - their inspiration has often been found in the V&A. Here, they have used a Neo-classical theme for the decorative over-printing.

The cardigan and sweater have received a Design Council Award.
