Place of origin |
A cross section of Wyatt's Theatre Royal Drury Lane, drawn to scale. The plan is inscribed in ink at the centre top 'Transverse Section of Theatre Royal Drury Lane, built in the year 181[1]'. It is annotated in pencil with labels, measurements, and the final digit [1] of the year in the inscription.
This plan is from the Winston Collection, and are likely to date from circa 1819 as the plan is watermarked J.WHATMAN 1819.
Although Mr. Samuel Beazley Jr. was the architect for the proposed alterations to the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the 1820's, this collection indicates that Mr James Winston (born c.1773) played an active role in the proposal alterations. It is however unclear if he actually drew the plans himself or copied from original ones and added some notes. Appointed as Acting Manager of Drury Lane in 1819 Winston continued to be involved with the theatre until c.1827 and kept unpublished diaries of his time there.
