For several suuccessive evenings in January 1879, Edgar Degas (1834-1917) attended performances by the aerialiste Miss La La - Anna Olga Brown (1858-1945), one of the most celebrated circus performers of the day, whose performance involved her being hoisted nearly seventy feet into the domed ceiling of the circus, suspended only by a rope clenched between her teeth.
