Poster advertising Eurythmics at Union House, Portsmouth Polytechnic, 8 March 1983.

Eurythmics did play Portsmouth on 8 March, but not at the venue advertised on this poster. Andy Stubbs, who was the Social Secretary for Portsmouth Polytechnic Students Union, 1981-83, told the museum:

Eurythmics "Love Is A Stranger" single was not a great success when first released, but it persuaded me that Annie Lennox would surpass the pop catchiness exemplified in her cover of "I Only Wanna be With You" when she and Dave Stewart were in the Tourists. With the announcement of a new Eurythmics album to accompany a UK tour, I felt the band were on the up and this was the time to book them. The booking I initially made was for the 350 capacity Union House at Portsmouth Polytechnic and Ric Robinson volunteered to produce artwork for publicity. As the Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) single began to climb the charts, the band's agent rang to express concern about the small venue and its facilities. A quick telephone call established that the 2,500 capacity Portsmouth Locarno was available and the gig was moved to everyone's satisfaction. On the day their single was at number 5 in the charts. The band turned up and Annie said Dave was feeling unwell and asked if many tickets had been sold. I replied, "yeah about 2,000 so far, they are a hot ticket." Lennox exclaimed, "Shit, we have a show to do then! As Dave's not great can you get him a stool?" It was done. It was an amazing show with Clem Burke of Blondie fame on drums and Mickey Gallagher of the Blockheads on keyboards.

POSTER FOR EURYTHMICS CONCERT
1983

Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart became a pop duo under the name Eurythmics in 1980. While touring their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) in 1983, they were scheduled to play at the Union House, Portsmouth Polytechnic. But when the hugely popular title single charted, the demand for tickets surged and the organisers moved the concert to a larger venue, the Locarno.
