Necklace

1800-1850 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Necklaces of filigree plaques and garnet-coloured beads were worn with traditional costume in many places in the south German region, including Austria and Switzerland. This necklace was described as German, made in the early 18th century, when it was acquired in 1872, but it is not a traditional design. It is more likely that it was put together in its present form not long before that date, although it may incorporate older elements.
