Artist/Maker
Place of origin

By June 1848 when he was appearing at the Queen's Theatre Hull, Ira Aldridge (1807-1867) was a celebrated actor and manager, having performed and toured in the UK since his first appearance on the London stage aged 17. This playbill would have been one of several that would have been printed for every night of his appearance that week. It advertised his Benefit night on Friday 23rd June, when as Beneficiary he would have been entitled to a share of the evening's profits. He played what is described on the playbill as 'as three of his most popular characters', Bertram the Pirate in The Sicilian Mariner; Ginger Blue in The Virginian Mummy, and Man Friday in Robinson Crusoe. The playbill includes a note of the programme for the following evening, Saturday June 24th, his last appearance at the theatre that week, when he was to appear in The African's Last Revenge, and Obi, or three-Fingered Jack.
