Place of origin |
This advertises that the evening's programme started at 8.30 but judging from the size of the typography of her name, the star of the show was undoubtedly Miss Lurline 'the Queen of the Waters' whose appearance is advertised for 10 o'clock. Also known as 'the mermaid', Miss Lurline's performance principally consisted of staying submerged in a glass tank of water surrounded by fish for two and a half minutes at a time, performing acrobatics and apparently even eating, wearing a close-fitting bodice and fleshings.
Other performers on the bill include Segommer, described as the 'world-famous Ventriloquist and Protean Artist' when he appearing at the London Hippodrome in 1901; Felicien Trewey (1848-1920), the multi-talented magician, mime, comedian, tightrope walker, balance artist, dancer, musician, and 'shadowgraphist', and the equestrienne Mlle. Adeline (1830-1900). Born Christina Friederike Krause, she was trained by the great equestrian and circus proprietor Ernst Renz, and became one of his star performers. In 1858 she had married the equestrian Baptiste Loisset Junior.
