The musical Carmen Jones is an adaptation of Bizet’s opera Carmen with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Performed with an all-black cast, the action is updated from 19th-century Seville to a Second World War-era African American setting. In this Old Vic production, the title role was shared between American soprano Wilhelmenia Fernandez and British actress Sharon Benson.
