In the 17th century, new ways of cutting gems, particularly diamonds, led to a new style of jewellery throughout Europe, in which the gems themselves had greater prominence. They were set in light pierced openwork settings, often in the shape of stylised bows.

A pierced bow hangs from its lower edge, and the bottom part, which hangs from the centre of the bow, is the same as the top part, except that it has no earring fitting on the back. |
