Place of origin

This poster, printed without any theatre name or date, would have been designed by Alick Ritchie for a touring production of the two-act musical play A Country Girl so that it could be overposted with details of the performance. A Country Girl, or, Town and Country by James T. Tanner, with lyrics by Adrian Ross, additional lyrics by Percy Greenbank, music by Lionel Monckton and additional songs by Paul Rubens, opened at London's Daly's Theatre on the 18th January 1902. Starring Hayden Coffin, Bertram Wallis, Evie Greene, Huntley Wright, Lilian Eldeé, Topsy Sinden, Ethyl Irving and Rutland Barrington, it ran for 729 performances, the fourth longest run for any piece of musical theatre up to that time. It was revived by Daly's in October 1914.

The Scottish artist Alexander 'Alick' Pernrose Forbes Ritchie (1868-1938) was born in Dundee and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Antwerp before settling in London as a commercial artist. He produced many cartoons for Vanity Fair, The Sketch, The Bystander and many other magazines and journals. He became well known for his theatrical posters, and between the wars also produced posters for the London Underground.
