The Wiz
The Wiz was one of the first large-scale Broadway shows to feature an all-Black cast, with soul, funk and disco providing inspiration for musical numbers. The show was later adapted into a film starring Diana Ross as Harlem schoolteacher Dorothy. In the 2021 revival, designer Simon Kenny drew inspiration from 1970s and ’80s New York graffiti artist Michael ‘Iz the Wiz’ Martin and paid homage to previous iterations of The Wizard of Oz and The Wiz by incorporating cultural iconography into the set.
