Place of origin |
An Artist's Model was a two-act musical by Owen Hall with lyrics by Harry Greenbank and music by Sidney Jones that opened at Daly's Theatre in London, 2nd February 1895, and transferred to the Lyric Theatre on 28th May 1895, where it used the same poster design. Produced by George Edwardes and directed by James T. Tanner, the musical starred Marie Tempest in the title role of Adele; Hayden Coffin as Rudolph Blair, Leonora Braham as Barbara Cripps, and Letty Lind as Daisy Vane.
After the success of A Gaiety Girl in 1893 and The Shop Girl in 1894 at the Gaiety Theatre, by the same team of Hall, Greenbank and Jones, George Edwardes wanted his Daly's Theatre musicals to be slightly more sophisticated. The story of the opera, set in France, concerns an artist's model who becomes a widow, and her love life with an artist who at first rejects her advances, and an English nobleman to whom she becomes engaged. The opening chorus: 'With brush on hand and palette gay our varied talents we display' is reflected in the poster image by the artist Julius Mendes Price.
