Penrith, Cumbria. 25.09.1899. Performance category: variety, music hall, minstrels, stump performer. NB 'minstrels' or 'minstrelsy' originated in the United States around 1830 and was based on racist negative stereotypes. Minstrelsy played a significant role in cementing and proliferating racist attitudes. The term is repeated here in its original historical context. |
