Small fragments of Persian calligraphy are pasted on the page next to the central panel of Persian verse. The edges of the separate pieces are concealed under the golden ground painted with flowers inspired by European books of botanical illustrations. These, and the animals at upper right, were painted by Jahangir’s artists. Floral borders were then added during Shah Jahan’s reign. Such composite pages characterise his royal albums, none of which survive intact.
