A full page illustration from the periodical Truth: Christmas Number. The lithograph is entitled The National Punch and Judy Show. It was printed on 25th December 1882 and the lithograph was produced by Maclure & Macdonald.
It shows a rowdy crowd scrambling to watch a Punch and Judy show. The trees, swing boats and merry-go-round visible in the background suggest that the booth for this show has been set up in the middle of a park. The majority of the audience members are turning so that their faces (many of which appear to be caricatures of leading political and social personalities) are visible from the front.
This illustration accompanies a series of comic sketches printed in the same issue of Truth, all of which have been produced in the style of a Punch and Judy show.
