Charles-François Mauzurier made a hit in Pulcinelle Vampireand Jacko, The Brazilian Monkey, both plays written by Jean-Baptiste Blache, at the Porte St. Martin Théâtre in Paris in 1823. In November 1825 he performed his comic Punch dance in Punchinelle Vampire at the Theatre Royal, Covent Garden, under the title The Shipwreck of Policinello. The V&A Theatre and Performance Collections holds playbills for his performances at Covent Garden.
At the opening in London the manager Charles Kemble spoke an address noting the hump Mazurier wore, and his similarity to a marionette:
Come, all ye admirers of Punch,
Come and gaze on our Policinelle,
Did ever a soul wear a hunch
Or scream with his voice half so well?
And his joints are so supple they seem
As if they were hung upon wires;
And his leaps, and his walks, and his screams,
Are what every Parisian admires
