A coloured engraving showing the costume worn by the actor Villeneuve in the title role in the tragedy Calas at the Théâtre Ambigu Comique.
Below the image is a quote from the play:
"...livrer mon fils!...jamais!...jamais!..."
Calas was 'mélodrame' in three acts by M. Victor. It was first performed at the Le théâtre de l'Ambigu-Comique on 20th November 1819. The play itself was inspired by the tragic death of Jean Calas (1698-1762) who was sentenced to 'death on the wheel' for murdering his son. He was subsequently proved to be innocent.
This design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 483. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
