"Vorrei frenar la lagrime
Vorrei cela l'affanno"
Les Horaces, to words of Guillard after Corneille, and music by Antonio Salieri (1750-1825), premiered in Versailles on 2 December 1786 and at the Paris Opéra five days later. Unfortunately it did not prove popular with audiences. The dramatist Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799) is said to have described it as "A very nice piece of work, but a little too austere for Paris".
This design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 454. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
