Physical description
This full length coloured engraving shows two men seated at a wooden table, its surface covered with a ragged crimson cloth and a pile of turned cards. The men are seated on three legged stools on either side of the table staring intensely and suspiciously into each other's eyes. The man on the left is dressed in a pale blue coat, patched crimson trousers and a white and crimson striped waistcoat. He is holding a fan of three cards in front of him in his left hand but is concealing two further cards in his right which he holds firmly behind his back. Seated opposite him, the other man wears a pale grey overcoat over a tawny shirt, green breeches and buff coloured gaiters. He is leaning his chin against his right hand and holds a fan of cards in his left.
