Rail Pass

early 20th century (printed), 23rd November 1933 (writing)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

One year rail pass for the Music Hall Artistes' Railway Association, dated from November 23rd 1933 and belonging to Mrs Jack Terry.

In order to reach their engagements at theatres all over the British Isles, most music hall artistes ended up spending much of their time travelling up and down the country. The Music Hall Artistes' Railway Association was an organisation which got its members reduced fares on the trains. Mrs Jack Terry needed to take this membership card and a special voucher with her to get the one third discount allowed under the scheme. The card cost twenty shillings for the year in 1933, and the discount only worked in First or Third Class carriages. If you spent a lot of time on the road in your career, the savings must have been quite large.
