A coloured engraving showing the costume worn by the actor Vertpré in the role of Benoit in Le Pauvre de Notre dame at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in Paris.
Below the image is a quote from the play:
"Mais ce qu'on donne au hasard
Se retrouve tôt ou tard;
De payer un bon office
Quelque fois le moment vient
Un grand oublie un service
Mais un petit s'en souvient" (Acte 1, Scene VI)
Benoît ou le Pauvre de Notre-Dame was written by Marie-Joseph Pain (1773-1830) (a prolific author of over 50 'Vaudevilles' and 'Comedies'). It was a comedy in two acts, in prose, published circa 1809.
This design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 195. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
