Below the image is a quote from the play:
"Mais ce qu'on donne au hasard
Se retrouve tôt ou tard;
De payer un bon office
Quelque fois le moment vient
Un grand oublie un service
Mais un petit s'en souvient" (Acte 1, Scene VI)

Benoît ou le Pauvre de Notre-Dame was written by Marie-Joseph Pain (1773-1830) (a prolific author of over 50 'Vaudevilles' and 'Comedies'). It was a comedy in two acts, in prose, published circa 1809.

This design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 195. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.

Physical description
This full length coloured engraving shows a man dressed in an oversized maroon overcoat, fastened at the front with large white buttons. Beneath this he wears dark knee breeches with a small buckle at the knee and a pair of striped stockings. He is shown in profile with this hands at chest level, the fingers interlinked.
