This marble bust is a portrait of King Louis XVI of France (it was formerly believed to be King Louis XVIII) and was sculpted in France almost certainly in the 19th century. Louis XVI (1754-1793) reigned from 1774-1792. He lost his throne in the French Revolution and was later beheaded by the revolutionary regime. His interests included locksmithing, metalwork, woodwork, stonemasonry and cartography.

Object history
Given by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wallraf. This bust was at one stage thought to represent Louis XVIII, but it is now recognised as a retrospective portrait of Louis XVI.
