Charlotte Vanhove Talma (also known as Caroline) was born in 1771 and first appeared at the Comedie Française in 1785. She was married to the actor Joseph Francois Talma but their relationship was not a success. Unable to obtain a divorce, she spent much of her life painting, drawing and writing. She died a Countess, at the age of 90, having been remarried in 1826 to an old friend the 'Comte de Chalot, un cavalier.'

This design appears to be part of a series of prints published by Martinet, Rue du Coq, of which this example is labelled as number 96. It is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
