Place of origin |
A coloured lithograph entitled 'Costume de Garde dans Ango'.
The text at the top of the print indicates that it is No.202 of a series.
All the other prints in this series (all of which were published by the same printer, Aubert, either under Aubert & Cie or Aubert et de Junca) appear to have been associated with theatrical or operatic production in France in the mid 19th century. Although no specific reference to either the play or actor depicted could be found it is possibly that the title Ango may refer to a play inspired by the exploits of Jean Ango (1480-1551), a French ship owner, famous for his attack on the Portuguese Fleet in 1531.
The print is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
