A coloured lithograph of the actor Pierre Lafont (1797-1873) in the title role of Pierre le Rouge.
The text at the top of the print indicates that it is No.44 of a series. It appears to have been connected with a production at the Vaudeville Theatre.
Born at Bordeaux on the 5th of May 1797, Lafont abandoned his profession as assistant ship's doctor in the navy to go to Paris to study singing and acting. He made his debut in 1821 in a production of La Sornnambule at the Vaudeville, and his good looks and excellent voice soon brought him into public favour. He ended his brilliant career at the Gymnase in the part of the noble father in such plays as Les Vieux Garcons and Nos bons villageois. He died in Paris on 19th April 1873.
The print is part of the Harry Beard Collection.
