One of a collection of 26 theatrical lithographs. This shows the actress Madlle. Dumesnil (1712-1803) in the role of Athalie, possibly in a play of the same name. The lithographer is not named but all the lithographs appear to have been published by Robert Sayer, London (1772).
Marie Françoise Dumesnil was a French actress who began her career in the provinces but was summoned to join the Comédie Française in 1737. Particularly praised for her tragic roles she became rivals with fellow tragic actress Clair Josèphe Hippolyte Leris (referred to as 'La Clairon', 1723-1803). Indeed the rivalry escalated to such a degree that in 1800 Dumesnil authorized the publication of a "Mémoire de Marie Françoise Dumesnil, en réponse aux mémoires d'Hippolyte Clairon".
She retired from the stage in 1776.
