One of a collection of 26 theatrical lithographs. This shows the playwright and comic actor Bellecour in the role of Philoctecte in OEdipe. A caption below the image reads 'Mais un Prince, un Guerrier, tel que vous tel que moi, Quand il A dit un mot est cru sur sa foi'.

The lithographer is not named but all the lithographs appear to have been published by Robert Sayer, London (1772).

Trained as a painter Bellecour rose to become one of the leading actors of acting company, The Comédie-Française where he made his debut in 1750. He specialised in comic roles and acted primarily in comedies over the next thirty years. He also wrote a successful play, Fausses apparences (1761), and was useful to the Comédie-Française in editing and adapting the plays of others. His wife, Rose Perrine le Roy de la Corbinaye, was also a famous actress.

One of a bound collection of lithographs of French Dramatic Characters, published by Robert Sayer, London, 1772. This shows Mr. Bellecour as Philoctecte in OEdipe. Harry Beard Collection.
Physical description
Printed in the centre of the page this full length lithograph shows a profile image of a man. Armed with a bow (which he carries in his left hand) he is dressed in loose, leopard print, furs, a plumed helmet and sandals, and carries a quiver of arrows over his right shoulder.
