With the monogram A and L in red, black and white, the brooch is engraved 'from Alice and Louis, 24th May 1873', and has a compartment in the reverse containing a lock of hair. It was a present to Queen Victoria on her birthday from her daughter Princess Alice and her son-in-law Prince Louis of Hesse. In accordance with their mother's wishes, it was given by Victoria's daughters after her death to Mrs. Maude Lort Phillipps, maid-of-honour to the Queen.
