Place of origin |
Outer cover of the sheet music for I've Been Down to the Races written and composed by A.J.Mills (1872-1919) and F.W. Carter, sung by Leonard Barry and published by Francis, Day & Hunter in circa 1899.
The front sheet is covered in a pale blue wash and decorated with two colour lithographs. The image of the left hand side is a full length illustration of the singer Leonard Barry dressed in checked trousers, a pale blue jacket with matching waistcoat and hat. A pale red bowtie completes the outfit. He stands with his hands in his pockets facing the front. A small circular illustration to the right of this full length illustration, shows a scene from a horse race in which a glossy horse is being ridden by a jockey who, (as its caption suggests) is struggling to make his way through the thick crowds of people.
The back sheet is printed with a list of the Francis Day and Hunter's 'Newest Comic Songs'. The inner cover of the back sheet is printed with the lyrics for the song.
